Anilao

The Philippines

Just a few hours from Manila, in the Batangas Province, lies Anilao. Anilao has long been considered one of the best diving spots in the Philippines, attracting both beginners and experienced divers. The proximity to Manila is one of the reasons Anilao has become such a popular destination for both local and international divers.

The area’s reefs are part of the Coral Triangle, known as the "global epicenter of marine biodiversity," which helps explain the incredible variety of marine life. Anilao is particularly well-known for its macro diving opportunities, making it a paradise for photography lovers. Its 26-30C water temperature, along with its 15-30m visibility between December to May, also makes Anilao a top-notch dive destination for anyone who lives in Asia.

Diver Requirements

Open water diver (Advanced certification and SMB are recommended for all boat diving)

Below the Surface

This location offers an exceptional variety of smaller marine creatures. Many colorful and diverse nudibranchs can be found in abundance. Seahorses, especially pygmy seahorses, are sought after by macro photographers. Look carefully at the black, white, yellow, grey, and orange of what appears to be sponges along the reef; they’re often frogfish. Harlequin and mantis shrimps are also common sightings.

Special Dive Site:
Matu Point – A deeper dive with impressive drop-offs where pelagic species, including mantas, sharks, and schooling jackfish can be seen

Secret Bay – A must-see for macro enthusiasts. Famous for its muck diving, where you can see fascinating creatures such as frogfish, pygmy seahorses, and juvenile fish.

Above the Surface

Taal Volcano – A short drive from Anilao, it’s one of the world’s smallest active volcanoes. After a trek up to the rim for a spectacular view, you can explore the Crater Lake in a boat. A short distance away is a volcanic hot spring where you can relax after the day’s journey.

Marikaban or Sombrero Island – A short boat ride away, you can visit either of these islands for some clear water, perfect for snorkeling and swimming.

How to Get There

You can get flights to Manila from almost any major city in Asia. You can then organize your hotel to pick you up and take you directly to Anilao.
